The Magnificent World of Port Wine

Port Wine is undoubtedly one of the most renowned Portuguese trades, celebrated for its exceptional quality and unique characteristics. However, it is more than just wine, it is a part of the cultural heritage, representing hard work and experience that has been passed down through generations of Portuguese families. This wonderful wine comes from the Douro Valley, Portugal's most beautiful wine region which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique hillside vineyards and it is the oldest demarcated wine region on the planet.

Historical Background

Winemaking in Portugal can be traced back to antiquity, with evidence of grape cultivation in the northwestern region of the Iberian Peninsula dating back nearly two thousand years. The Romans, who were in Portugal for around 500 hundred years (starting 200 BCE) also played a role in cultivating vines and producing wine along the banks of the Douro River. However, it was not until the latter half of the 17th century that Port wine, as we know it today, emerged.

A Flourishing Trade with England

The close trade ties between England and Portugal led to the settlement of numerous English merchants in Portugal. By the second half of the 15th century, Portugal was exporting a substantial quantity of wine to England, often in exchange for salt cod. As the demand for superior wines increased among English consumers, merchants ventured into the inland regions along the Douro River in search of higher quality wines, and their efforts were met with success.

The Origins of Port Wine

Port Wine was born out of the necessity to preserve wine during its long journey from the Douro Valley to Porto and ultimately England. Initially, it was fortified with the addition of brandy. In modern times, the fortification process for Port wine has evolved, with fortification now taking place during fermentation rather than after aging.

Explore the Port Wine Caves

When we first moved to Portugal, our knowledge of Port wine was limited to a few basic Tawny or Ruby varieties. However, after visiting the Port Wine Caves in Porto, we discovered that there is so much more to this wonderful wine. If you are fortunate enough to have a Portuguese friend, they may share a very old and special reserve with you, providing an unforgettable experience.

If you are planning a visit to Porto, I highly recommend dedicating at least a day to visit the wine caves and indulge in tastings. Among the various tours available, my personal favorite was at Grahams, where a wonderful lunch at their restaurant, Vinums, was the end to a perfect day. Remember to make reservations for tours in advance. If you are interested in trying Port wine back in the states, Taylors and Grahams are established brands that offer high-quality options and can be readily found.

If you are considering a “dental holiday” let us know, we are here to help you find your Smile in Lisbon and make your trip to Portugal a memorable one.

Dental health has been a concern for humanity throughout history, and ancient civilizations developed various practices and beliefs to maintain oral hygiene. Some of the world’s greatest cultures left us clues about how they took care of their teeth. Here are a few of the dental practices of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Mayans. These insights show us their understanding of dental health and their innovative methods of caring for their teeth.

The Egyptians

The ancient Egyptians placed great importance on dental health. They believed that dental problems were caused by supernatural beings and magical curses. To maintain oral hygiene, Egyptians used chew sticks made from frayed twigs or fibers to clean their teeth. Additionally, they used a mixture of crushed pumice stone and wine vinegar as a toothpaste. Archaeological evidence shows that the Egyptians also performed dental treatments like fillings and extractions.

The Greeks:

The ancient Greeks valued dental hygiene for both aesthetic and health reasons. They believed that a beautiful smile was a sign of good character. Greek physicians, such as Hippocrates and Aristotle, wrote about dental diseases and treatments. To clean their teeth, Greeks used a mixture of charcoal and honey, and they also employed toothpicks made from quills. Greek dentists specialized in tooth extraction and used forceps and dental drills for dental procedures.

The Romans:

The Romans inherited many dental practices from the Greeks and improved upon them. They believed that bad breath was a sign of moral decay and considered dental health essential for maintaining a respectable appearance. Romans used a variety of materials, including crushed bones and oyster shells, to create toothpaste. They also developed tooth powders with ingredients like charcoal, myrrh, and bark. Dental treatments in Rome included fillings made from lead and gold, as well as tooth extraction.

The Mayans:

The Mayans, an ancient Mesoamerican civilization, had a unique approach to dental health. They believed that certain oral diseases were caused by evil spirits or imbalances in the body. Mayans used various natural substances for toothpaste, such as a mixture of charcoal, herbs, and water. They also practiced dental modification, including filing their teeth into different shapes and embedding gemstones into the teeth as a form of decoration.

Ancient civilizations throughout the world realized early on the importance of oral hygiene and developed practices and techniques to maintain a healthy life. They left behind a rich legacy of dental practices that have influenced modern dentistry in numerous ways. Today, as we benefit from advanced dental care, we can appreciate the wisdom and ingenuity of our ancestors in their pursuit of good dental health.

Thankfully we have significantly more advanced technology used today and Portugal dentists are known as some of the best in the world. If you need dental work done and at highly affordable rates, feel free to get in touch with us. We can help.

Tooth be Told…. The Pitfalls of Turkey Teeth

Tooth be Told. The pitfalls of Turkey Teeth.
Thinking of getting “The Hollywood Smile” and going to Turkey for cheap dental care? Think again and be more informed so you don’t become a victim of Turkey Teeth.

“I Wish I Would Have Known….”

This is a phrase we hear all too often and unfortunately it comes too late after dental work has been done. This typically applies in one of two ways.
1. The client could have saved thousands of dollars on their dental work abroad but were unaware of dental tourism abroad as an option
OR
2. The client was lured by the cheapest option and did little to no research and ended up with worse dental problems than they started with.
Being informed is key to not only saving money but saving your teeth by ensuring you find the best professional options available.

The reason Mimi and I are so passionate about our business is because we know first hand how excellent the dental care is in Portugal and have experienced it first hand. We wanted to bring that credibility and expertise of the dental profession in Portugal to the medical tourism sector providing a better option to those seeking affordable treatment abroad.

While popular countries such as Turkey and Mexico may offer enticing prices for dental procedures, it’s key to consider the safety aspects and potential risks associated with seeking treatment outside the European Union (EU).

Tourism aside, we selected Portugal for our business model as it pertains to high quality dental care. Here’s why:

  1. Regulatory Standards: One of the primary reasons why it’s safer to have dental treatment within the EU is the stringent regulatory standards in place. EU countries adhere to strict guidelines and regulations concerning dental care, ensuring that patients receive a high level of treatment.

  2. Qualifications and Training: Dentists and dental professionals within the EU are required to meet specific educational and training standards to practice. These standards ensure that practitioners possess the necessary skills and knowledge to provide safe, effective dental care.

  3. Legal Protections: Patients receiving dental treatment within the EU have access to legal protections in case something goes wrong during their procedure. EU countries have established processes for addressing complaints and seeking compensation for medical negligence.

We realize consumers are exploring a variety of options and countries to choose from but it is key you do your research.

A Concerning Trend to Watch out for - Turkey Teeth

While some may be familiar with the term "Turkey Teeth" due to its popularity on viral Tik Tok videos, many may not have heard of it. This is a term used in a sarcastic manner to highlight the artificiality of the teeth acquired through the use of crowns or veneers, which often require sacrificing healthy and natural teeth by shaving them up to 70% to achieve the desired smile.

A variety of Reality TV stars have helped make Turkey Teeth a trend, otherwise known as “The Hollywood Smile”. Sadly, this has taken a toll on the teeth of thousands, especially people from the United Kingdom  who travel to nearby Turkey for cheap dental work. Dentists in the UK are seeing serious dental issues such as dead stumps, abscesses, and nerve damage after undergoing cosmetic dental procedures in Turkey.

According to the Irish Sun Times, Amanda Turner, 34, from Belfast, jetted to Istanbul earlier this month to get dental crowns (28) and root canal surgery, setting her back €3,628. What she received was a botched dental treatment. She is still in agony and has had to pay €20k to fix the problems. She is one of many bad outcomes from “Turkey Teeth”. To read Amanda’s full story, click on link at bottom.

It's important to note that while veneers can be a great option for cosmetic dental work and a beautiful smile, they may not be appropriate for everyone. A highly qualified and trained dentist will be able to advise you on whether they are a good choice for your specific situation. Additionally, veneers require a certain amount of preparation and removal of natural tooth structure, so it's important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding on this treatment. Veneers are not permanent and need to be replaced every 5-15 years depending on the material.

Whether you come to Portugal for your dental work or not we want you to be safe, get quality dental care and not get taken advantage of. Some people are simply making decisions solely based on the lowest price - we know is a factor but if you get bad dental work it may cost you thousands more with your dentist back home to repair the damage if that is even possible.
